THE HEIGHT OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES
To my dear brothers scouts I do not want to go through this and yes we are ready happens ... One always ready for your leadership to rise to the occasion NOTICE "Walk to Carpenter Rocks. The Patrol will meet at the station trucks at 9 am sharp. In full uniform. Bring cake and something to snack. Back at 9 pm Signed S. Romero, GP "I still remember, is how the news spread, except that Sam wrote "estasión" and put "h" in something. Of course we are in the truck stop, all in full uniform, as stated in the notice, unless David Cardenas, who had just joined the troop and had not even graced with shirt and scarf Group. We sighed when we saw it coming. In honor of the occasion wearing a white shirt with belt and red and yellow stripes with snakeskin buckle, a pair of pants buttoned below the knee and a new hat. Poor kid was obviously pleased with himself and so proud of his hat Scout had not the heart to ask that we not take him! The truck began to walk and we huddled inside. It was a beautiful spring day, with accumulations bobbing in the blue sky and a lively breeze that hit northern dams to become foam on the beach Matatena formed below the hill. We swam in the pools of the rocks of the surroundings. Hunt crabs. Seaweed together. We did ducks with Matatena on the water, we played the shooting of a duck decoy made of stone, we did all the things that Scouts do when they are at the seashore. Most of the time we had the small bay for us. People will prefer Sunday sands and vistas to the north. David Cardenas had a glorious day. As a Pietierno often had difficulties. He slipped on the algae and sat down in a pool. Ate more than usual at lunchtime and was slightly indisposed in a cave. At snack time, and his white shirt was not so, his belt was twisted, his socks had fallen down, the knees of his blue pants and the seat should not mention it, but it was green. Despite what had happened, his new hat was free from harm. When the day was filled with cool breeze and a few drops of rain began to fall after tea, Sam looked at the sky and decided to end the day. Orders were given to lift, pack and be ready and look at the cliff again, before the Patrol Guide gave us the order to leave. As we stood in that place a gust of wind took the Pietierno his hat again. He went tumbling over the edges of the cliff like a ring and disappeared to reach the shore. With a cry David ran after him and disappeared also. When we got up he found his face on the rocks. Seemed to have crashed on its side, was not a nice look. Not entirely their own for a set of Scouts like us. His left eye was open and staring was doing some strange gurgling in his throat. We stood around dumbfounded and terrified. Everyone turned and looked at Sam. Exactly half a minute Sam said nothing. He knelt down gently took one of his hands and closed his eye open. Then carefully put the boy's head and hit it slightly so that the blood was bubbling from his throat out of his mouth on the rocks. After that, the gobbling stopped and we all feel better. I told you earlier that Sam never ordered anything, nor did anything this time, but told us we had to do and we did. One thing I remember is that we gave instructions to each by name, did not say: some go for help or run and bring some water. Just said, you're the best runner or something like putting in urology (if you see what I mean), before telling us he wanted us to do and gladly obeyed, something to do was everything we wanted. Frederick James and a companion were sent to the phone in order the road with handling instructions and emergency button and ask the operator for the nearest hospital. Was to tell the people at the hospital that a boy had fallen from a height of 9 feet, just on the rocks north of Carpenter and was unconscious and seriously injured. Having done this, he left to wait until the ambulance and bring it so accurate. If the doctors of the hospital sent special instructions, Federico was to bring the message. Jaime expected. Peter's work was to gather all the belts tight and in case they were needed. Roberto was sent to the nearest towns to get help. The rest of the Patrol are sent pieces of wood together when the slats were necessary. I was one of the tablets collected and remember that soon gathered enough wood to build a bonfire, but Sam would not let us stop and told us more. Later I realized that the idea was to keep us busy. Since we had nothing to do. The same was crouched near the Pietierno unconscious patiently, watching and waiting, must have been a terrible ordeal for him, just sitting there without doing anything. Had a pair of waterproof over young David to keep warm and when I saw it when doing the side to remove the blood from his mouth. He was doing this and nothing more, until he reached aid. Well, you do not get medals just for not losing his head and less as I do, so that no Sam tapped him on the back and said, Well done! None said they had saved the life of a Pietierno, none thanked him for having behaved like a bulwark between the boys, their positions and the terrible sight of his wounded comrade. It may be that some people did not think he was partly to blame for allowing the Pietierno run on the hill in front of everyone. I know nothing about it. All I know is that Sam not only not lost his head but we did it keep us. No views sorcerer became the first aid because realized that David's injuries were so serious that any attempt to alleviate them would probably have been more harmful than beneficial, but among all these limitations, the Guide fell short of the circumstances. Achieved first possession of the situation immediately. Secondly, given time to think before making a decision. In third place was the worst jobs, the inactivity for himself and gave everyone something positive to do. At the same time remained at the center of all things, where he could direct the operations if necessary. Finally he gave us orders were clear and simple, we just called each by name and we given a specific task according to our skill or hobby. Kipling says in this poem: "If you can keep your head when everyone around you are losing and you are blaming" ... is the touch of Kipling that the Kestrels got through this situation so committed. Were the qualities of the Patrol that we saw in the little things, which acted in the great. Someday you will be playing, you never know when. From the book "Patrol Activities" by John Sweet.
